How to add an EPG to Plex
Plex can record and show live TV with a programme guide, but it needs a tuner. Threadfin (or xTeVe) turns your IPTV playlist into a tuner Plex understands, and your EPG Full link gives Plex the guide.
Steps
- Install Threadfin (or xTeVe) on your server: it presents your IPTV playlist to Plex as a tuner.
- In Threadfin, add your playlist under Playlist and your EPG Full link under XMLTV, then map the channels in Mapping.
- In Plex, open Settings → Live TV & DVR → Set up Plex DVR and pick the Threadfin device.
- When Plex asks for a guide, choose XMLTV and enter Threadfin's XMLTV address, then finish the setup.
Tips for Plex
- Map the channels in Threadfin once; new channels from your provider then only need a quick check.
- A custom guide with only the categories you watch keeps Plex's channel list short and the guide fast.
Which link do I use?
In your EPG Full panel you get three links: epg.xml.gz (every channel), eu.xml.gz (European channels) and world.xml.gz (other countries), plus a custom link with only the categories you choose. On slower TV boxes, add only what you need.
Channels still empty?
Let the player download the guide once (a minute on slow boxes), then refresh the EPG. Event and PPV channels show a placeholder with the event name.
Questions about Plex
Can I add the EPG link directly in Plex?
Plex's XMLTV option reads the guide that matches its tuner's channels. With IPTV, the simplest way is to load your EPG Full link in Threadfin and give Plex Threadfin's XMLTV address.
How often does Plex update the guide?
Plex refreshes guide data by itself on a schedule. EPG Full updates every hour, so each refresh gets the latest programmes.
